Tie with #9 CVCA 0-0

The Firestone Lady Falcons had a major milestone tonight in the recent memory of their program.  They tied #9 in Ohio Division 2 Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy 0-0.  CVCA had not been shut out all year.  Goalie Kristen Giaquinto had some great saves, even though Firestone had more scoring opportunities than CVCA did.  The defense of Lynn Barnes, Molly Loar, Reilly Daugherty, and Megan Zanin played stellar in the shutout.  Next home game is Mon, Oct 11 at 5 pm against Coventry at the Copley Road soccer complex.

win City Series over Ellet

The Lady Falcons won the City Series game against Ellet tonight at Ellet 4-0.  Their record is now 5 wins & 6 losses.  Tonight had special significance as a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society "Make Strides Against Breast Cancer."  Even as an away game the attendance from Firestone was probably around 75-100 which is the largest in at least the last 4 years.  Thanks for all the support.

Firestone wins 4-0 over Nordonia

The Firestone Lady Falcons soccer team beat Nordonia on Mon, Sept 20 4-0.  Alana Gaither scored all 4 goals.  The Firestone team dominated the game, worked well on the field, and clearly has gained a lot of confidence over its last games.  Their record is now 3-4 after starting 0-4.  This is their 2nd shut-out in a row and in their last three games their goal differential is 17-1.

Firestone 7 Canton McKinley 0

Firestone 7, Canton McKinley 0

Apparently, kicking eight extra points in Firestone's 72-0 football victory over Kenmore Friday night was just the warm-up act as the senior captain for the soccer squad, Alana Gaither, scored two goals and had three assists in this non-league win over the visiting Bulldogs. The Falcons (2-4) got off to a fast start, taking a 5-0 lead in the first half. Sophomore Shannon Ede contributed two goals and one assist, while Megan Zanin, Jayme Bryson and Lindsey Kirk each kicked in one apiece. "The entire team played well," Falcons assistant coach Jeff Woodruff said. "It was a good overall game. The girls played well together as a team."

win 6-1, record 1-4

After a difficult early season schedule, the Lady Falcons turned things around dramatically with a 6-1 win over Rootstown on Sept 14.  Stats are below, but the stats do not show a penalty kick save by goalie Kristin Giaquinto.

Goals: Alana Gaither 3, Shannon Ede, Megan Zanin, Olivia Oldfield.  Assists: Molly Loar 2, Jessica Liodas 2, Alana Gaither.  Shots on goal favored Firestone 35-3.

GlenOak Aug 30

We played a very good, undefeated GlenOak team.  They had had only one goal scored on them prior to our game.  Half time the score was 1-1 with our goal scored by Shannon Ede.  They scored within the first 10 minutes.  Momentum shifted the last part of the 1st half and we controlled the game and scored.  As the 2nd half started we clearly were playing a back and forth game.  With 10 minutes to go they went up 2-1.  They scored two goals in the last 2 minutes.

end of preseason

The varsity did well in its preseason scrimmages. A number of different people scored. With some freshmen and some jv players from last year, a good team across the board will be fielded this year. We will have new uniforms and a great spirit as we begin the season on Monday, August 23 at Ravenna High School.

next two weeks

The regular season is getting closer.  Just a few quick notes regarding the remainder of the summer and the start of our mandatory practice.
  • For the next 2 weeks (July 21 & 28) we will still be having open field on Wednesday's.  This will take place from 4:00 to 5:30 PM.  The reason that we are doing this is because the boys team will be using the field for camp and practice in the evening.  There is no open field on Wednesday August 4th.
  • First day of practice.  8/9/10.  This is Monday the 9th and is mandatory for all of those playing soccer this fall.  Running will take place from 6:30 to 8:00 am.  Will will then resume practice from 1:00 to 3:30 PM.  There will be a scrimmage on August 11, 2010 at Ellet.  This will take place at 7 PM.
  • Alumni Game is on Sunday August 15th at 3 PM.
  • PAPERWORK.  All athletes must have their physical form turned in before then can participate on Monday the 9th.  If we do not have your physical for you are not allowed to participate in team activities.

Please feel free to contact any one of the coaches with any questions that you may have.

5th game and final observations

We ended Sat morning with another 0-0 draw with Painesville Riverside.  Another good game where we had opportunities to score.

All five of the high schools we played are single high school districts which means the girls on those teams have had the opportunity to play together as a team for years.  Also, all of them only had their varsity players.

We bring all the girls who we know are planning to be out for the team and it is the first time for many of them to be playing together as a team.  For us this is really the beginning of the formation of the team.  The overnight stay was a good experience for the girls too and thanks to Mrs. Gaither, Coach Miller, Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Kirk for enabling that to happen.
All in all, we were 0-3-2, but in this bloggers opinion, it was a very productive weekend for the Firestone Falcon Girls Soccer team.  Go Stone!

a few comments on Friday games

This tournament is about preparing for the coming season.  The two teams we have played so far only had their varsity players present.  We have played our whole roster as it is now including new girls who have not officially practiced with the team, even though we have had conditioning twice a week and open field games once a week since June.  It was clear especially for the 1st game that the other team was very familiar with each other on the field  and they scored on some set plays they repeated.

What our coaches are about is giving an experience for all the girls to get to know each other and to have some field time.  Plus we started some new girls who have not played with our varsity before.

Today will be long and hot.  Pray for cool breezes!
